Mastodon API compat
on this blog…
Yup I see it. We’re excited that you’re excited!
Dave Winer, using some software I’m building. What a world. Welcome to the fediverse on WordPress.com!

The buyout was tempting, but while private equity parasites like Silver Lake hollow out and destroy ecosystems, Automattic is investing in the future of the web and WP by employing @pfefferle and myself to bring WordPress into the fediverse.
Thanks so much @darnell for posting your feedback! Let’s dive in.
Under the free plans, users can only use their domain name plus extension (example: @mastodontest.blog) as a handle, which is very tacky & looks weird.
My suggestion is to allow people under the free plans to choose their user handle, as this could encourage greater adoption of Automattic’s WordPress platform.
We want some friction there to encourage upgrades. It works, but if you want to customize it, pay us. We’ve always had the problem of giving away too much on the free plan.
Now onto stuff for Business Plan/dotorg users:
Allow users to receive pings when their main blog user handle is mentioned outside of a post response (make this setting off by default, but treat this like an author user handle profile)
I thought it did this already, will have to look into it! 🤔
Allow users to follow other Fediverse accounts within WordPress. I suggest making this exclusive for the Jetpack app, which is geared more towards being a social networking app.
Stay tuned! We’re still working through whether to extend the WordPress.com Reader or build something more ActivityPub-specific.
In the meantime, I suggest using Alex Kirk’s Friends plugin to follow others from a WP site.
When sharing posts to Fediverse accounts (via the JetPack plugin), automatically add a signature that features the ActivityPub user handle. For example, when share a post to Threads & Mastodon via Fedica from Flipboard, I include my fediverse handle @darnell (on Flipboard) so Fediverse users can follow me
Cool idea! I’ll pass this on to the team working on social sharing stuff.
Add Fediverse moderation tools like blocking, muting etcetera. Basically make it harder for weirdos & stalkers to follow your blog from the Fediverse
A serious weak point for sure! We’ve had some conversation around this area already.
Looking forward to digging into this next week!
Really excited for this new series from Doc Pop! It will definitely be what I’ll send to new/potential fediverse users.
The fediverse is sounding very cinematic today.
And the guy who works on federating WordPress posts to the fediverse with ActivityPub forgets to post.
Starting today, every site on WordPress.com can publish directly to the fediverse, powered by ActivityPub for WordPress.
But eventually, waiting ceases, and it’s action time.
